Opening Roster Set

The Blackhawks made their final roster cuts this afternoon, and they decided to carry three goalies to start the season. Yup, Cristobal Huet, Antti Niemi and Corey Crawford will start the year on the NHL roster. Niemi should get one of the starts in Finland seeing that he is the only Finnish player on the roster, and Huet will get the other.

Sent to Rockford were forwards Bryan Bickell, Evan Brophey, Jake Dowell, Rob Klinkhammer and Jack Skille. The newly acquired Radek Smolenak will take the final roster spot left open by an injury to Adam Burish. With the choice of carrying Smolenak on the roster, Quenneville decided to go with a little more grit rather than skill.

Kris Versteeg and Dustin Byfuglien saw action in yesterday’s game, so injuries that kept them out of a few games each shouldn’t be a problem.

Burish and Marian Hossa were placed on the Injured Reserve as expected.

Blackhawks Beat Up On The Swiss

The Blackhawks easily defeated HC Davos 9 – 2 this afternoon in their first of two exhibition games in Zurich, Switzerland before the regular season begins against the Florida Panthers. The Panthers, however, didn’t fare so well against their European opponent losing 3 – 2.

With the slew of injured ‘Hawks unable to suit up, guys like Bryan Bickell and Evan Brophey had an opportunity to make their way into the lineup again. New addition Radek Smolenak scored two goals in his Blackhawk debut. Jack Skille returned to the lineup, but didn’t make a mark on the score sheet.

In the last few games, Troy Brouwer played on the first line with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. He tallied one goal and one assist in today’s game. Brouwer did see some time with them last season. He is a lock to make the roster out of camp.

Coach Quenneville gave each backup goalie hopeful equal time in net – about thirty minutes each. Antti Niemi saved 6 of 7 shots, and Corey Crawford saved 4 of 5. The Swiss team didn’t test either goalie. This could be the last action that either goalie will see this pre-season.

I wouldn’t put too much stock into routing the Davos squad. National Hockey League teams should lay a beating on those in Europe – the skill level is nowhere close to equal. Tomorrow the Blackhawks play ZSC Lions Zurich.

Blackhawks Pick Up New Winger Off Waivers

The Blackhawks claimed twenty-two year old left-winger Radek Smolenak off waivers from the Tampa Bay Lightening. He will be added to the current active roster at training camp. A very minor move, but it does give the team more depth at forward with the all the injuries happening to guys on the active roster.

I’m heading to the game tonight, but if you want to read more about the ‘Hawks new winger check out the press release.

Beach Traded From Lethbridge To Spokane

Kyle Beach, who was just cut by the Blackhawks’s training camp, was traded by the Lethbridge Hurricanes to the Spokane Chiefs – both in the WHL. He was traded for a pair of defensemen.

Unless Beach is traded by the Chiefs during the season, he will play out the season with his new club. He has a year left of eligibility left at the junior level, thus keeping him from playing for Rockford.

This will be his third junior league team. He was traded mid-season last year to Lethbridge from the Everett Silvertips (WHL).

Skille Out, Two Re-called From Rockford

Add another injury to the list. It was reported yesterday that Jack Skille suffered a lower-body injury in Wednesday’s game in Washington. He will not play in tonight’s pre-season game vs. Minnesota. Skille was having a nice pre-season and this news could alter his chances of making the NHL roster out of training camp. Kris Versteeg (upper-body) and Dustin Byfuglien (groin) will be out of action as well.

Dave Bolland will be in the lineup tonight after missing the previous three pre-season games with a lower-back injury. He has been participating in the last couple practices this week. Bolland apparently played through the discomfort last year, and will do the same this season.

The Blackhawks also re-called two players yesterday to counter the injuries that are limiting guys from ice-time. Forwards Bryan Bickell and Rob Klinkhammer will rejoin the team after getting cut Tuesday. Also, forward Danny Bois and defenseman Richard Petiot were placed on waivers.

Chicago Backups Got One Game Each

The Blackhawks plan to take three goalies to Europe, so the battle for backup will end when training camp breaks. As it stands now each goalie has had the opportunity to play a whole pre-season game in net. Antti Niemi was in net against Minnesota and Corey Crawford was in the crease at Washington last night. By looking at the numbers in their respective games, one preformed better than the other.

Niemi faced seventeen shots, letting in three – one goal was scored when Minnesota had a two man advantage. Crawford’s night in net was busier – out of the thirty shots he saw, six were let in for goals. Three of them were on the power play. Each should get another sixty pre-season minutes in net before the final decision on who will back up Cristobal Huet.

Who ever gets the gig will have the chance to start twenty or more games over the course of the season. If we learned anything about Coach Quenneville last season is that he will play the hot hand. So either winner could get a chance to see some substantial time in net for the Blackhawks.

If experience plays into the eventual decision, Crawford could be the guy no matter what his pre-season stats look like. Even if Niemi is the more talented goalie and performs better in training camp and pre-season games.

Seven More Cut From Training Camp

Before the news came out that Adam Burish would miss about six months of the season with a torn ACL, the Blackhawks made seven cuts in the third round of roster trimming in training camp. After one game played, two top prospects were sent back to their junior hockey teams. Defenseman Shawn Lalonde will go back to the Belleville Bulls (OHL) and forward Kyle Beach will return to the Lethbridge Hurricanes (WHL).

The other five cut from the training camp roster will head to Rockford to finish out their training camp. They were forwards Bryan Bickell, Mark Cullen and Rob Klinkhammer and defensemen Daryl Boyle – a non-roster invite – and Brian Connelly.

The number of players stands at twenty-eight with Burish and Marian Hossa heading to the injury reserve.

Adam Burish Out Six Months With ACL Tear

The Blackhawks received some bad news today. Adam Burish will be out an expected six months with a torn ACL which he suffered in the first period of Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Wild. He is going to have surgery on the knee to repair the tear as soon as possible.

Burish will be missed in the locker room and on the ice as an effective instigator on the fourth line. This injury, however, ensures a roster spot for Jack Skille, Colin Fraser and Troy Brouwer right out of training camp.

Two Pre-season Games Down

In the set of pre-season games that happened over the weekend the Blackhawks lost to Washington in overtime and lost to Minnesota in regulation. These games don’t mean crap, so we won’t dwell on the poor record thus far. Still there are a few things that can be talked about.

Aside from Marian Hossa sitting on the shelf as he rehabs from his summer shoulder surgery, the Blackhawks are already facing other injury concerns. Dave Bolland still has yet to see any time on the ice during training camp or during either preseason game. Also Kris Versteeg was pulled from the Washington game in the first period with an upper-body injury, and Adam Burish limped off the ice in the first period against the Wild.

Reports out of camp are stating that Jack Skille appears to finally be ready to play at the NHL full-time, and his play in Saturday’s game backed up that observation. His presence on the ice was noticeable. Skille skated well and was able to show off some of his offensive skill with a quick wrist shot that beat Michal Neuvirth. He is making a solid case to avoid being sent back to Purgatory – a.k.a. Rockford.

The Blackhawks’ defense did a nice job limiting the Wild to seventeen shots on net, but Antti Niemi was only able stop fourteen of them in his three periods of work – one goal with only three men on the ice. It was initially thought that Corey Crawford would see some action in last night’s game. Crawford will have a whole game to himself to better Niemi’s performance.

A third round of cuts should come before the team’s third pre-season game on Wednesday. With only a few small roster spots to be fought for, any cuts coming shouldn’t really surprise anyone. Yet, I still like the process of building a team out of training camp and reading up on cuts when they happen.
