Yesterday’s Gone – Blackhawks 0, Predators 2

The only aspect of last night’s game in Nashville that worked was Cristobal Huet. His performance kept the Blackhawks in the game as the offense was unable to score on Pekka Rinne. Last night, few problems that the ‘Hawks have became apparent. The Blackhawks’ power play is bad going 0 for 5 yesterday, and anyone can see that putting Patrick Sharp on the point doesn’t work.

Taking penalties late in the game have impeded the team’s ability to mount a comeback in the third period – two subsequent penalties in the last ten minutes of the game will do that. Drawing late penalties was a problem in the 3-1 loss to Vancouver last week – the Canucks took advantage of them.

The Blackhawks have also seen their penalty totals rise in the last few games, and fortunately the team has been rather solid on the penalty kill. They rank sixth in the league while being short-handed with an 83.7 percent success rate. Still, the coaching staff should address the issue before it becomes a bigger problem as the ‘Hawks require discipline late in the game.

Tonight the Blackhawks get a chance to quickly put last night’s 2-0 loss to the Predators behind them. The Montreal Canadiens visit the United Center in an Original Six match-up. Antti Niemi should get start tonight – despite Huet’s solid net presence his last three starts. Huet will start tonight. The Canadiens have been going through goalie troubles of their own, and there are some Quebecers who would like to see Huet done the rouge, blanc, et bleu once again. Jaroslav Halak has seen more starts lately, but it’s likely that Carey Price will get the nod in Chicago.

Anyway, the Canadiens are a different looking team from past years. Former face of the franchise Saku Koivu is a Duck, and new additions Scott Gomez, Brian Gionta and Mike Cammalleri to now make up the core of the team with defenseman Andrei Markov sidelined. They are coming off an ugly loss to Pittsburgh two nights ago, and the Blackhawks are going to have to improve on last night’s offensive laps if they want to have any chance in hell to win this game.

Brouwer Gets Some Love

It is nice to see Troy Brouwer getting some love by the print media – Chris Kuc specifically. On a side note, Kuc is slowly becoming my favorite Blackhawks writer of the three Chicagoland newspapers. Anyway, I have mentioned a couple times at least this season that I like the player that Brouwer is developing into, and there are a few other bloggers that have alluded to his improvement as well.

Brouwer is already the player that the Blackhawks organization has been trying to mold the oafish Dustin Byfuglien into. He is great around the net (see Monday’s goal vs. the Wild), brings a physical game and can create scoring chances in the offensive zone. In the last four games Brouwer has three goals.

I am probably getting ahead of my self here – something I can to do when I write about the Blackhawks – but I always felt that Brouwer could develop into a Ryan Malone type player. When the organization is forced to evaluate their salary-cap situation at the end of the season, Bowman could move a bigger contract in favor of Brouwer and his $1M cap-hit next year.

Blackhawks Are Fine Despite Few Issues

The Blackhawks beat the Minnesota Wild 3-1 last night. It was Martin Havlat’s regular season return to the United Center and was held silent by his old club. The ‘Hawks were able to put this win over the Wild together due to solid goaltending from Cristobal Huet, a couple key rebounds in front of the net and a highlight goal from Patrick Kane in the third period.

With Brent Seabrook and Jonathan Toews missing the last two games with their respective head injuries, the Blackhawks have been able to come away with two victories and four points. Last night was just another win over a weaker Western Conference team. The current stretch of the schedule seems to make the Blackhawks’ problems appear to be not so bad.

If the ‘Hawks were playing tougher opponents, however, would the out come of the last two games differ? Would Seabrook and Toews stepped up and played through their concussion-like symptoms? Would Huet have been good enough to come away with just one goal scored on him in 120 minutes? The great thing is that we don’t have to worry about any of that. Despite all the team’s issues, the Blackhawks are first in the Central Division with fifteen points and a record of 7-3-1.

The biggest beneficiary of the Blackhawks current winning streak has to be The Man from France – as Eddie O tends to call him. Huet has seen his goals-against-average drop to a very respectable 2.49 on the year. It’s always nice to see better numbers, but at this point of the season the forward momentum he gets from winning is more important.

The Blackhawks don’t play another game until Thursday in Nashville with another on Friday at home hosting Les Canadiens. Coach Quenneville should start different goalies in back-to-back games. So what game does Huet get? I’m going to stick by my guns and say that he starts in Nashville, and that Antti Niemi will get the nod vs. Montreal.

There is still no timetable as to when Seabrook and Toews (and Ben Eager) will return, or if one is closer than the other. Forcing them to return to the ice before the concussion-like symptoms have regressed could be detrimental to career of each player. Seeing that Seabrook and Toews are the present and future of the franchise, the right decision will be made here.

In other news, the Blackhawks reassigned Jake Dowell to Rockford. Once again, Dowell could return to the NHL team before Thursday’s game if Toews is still recovering from concussion-like symptoms.

Huet To Start, Dowell Recalled And More

News…

- Yep, Jake Dowell has been recalled by the Blackhawks. This indicates that Jonathan Toews will miss another game with concussion-like symptoms. Nothing has been reported on the matter, or whither Brent Seabrook will miss tonight’s game as well – Jordan Hendry would replace him again if that is the case.

Update: Toews and Seabrook are out.

- Once again starting in net for the Blackhawks will be Cristobal Huet. Everyone is hoping that he can build on the shutout victory over the Predators. The Minnesota Wild are winless on the road (0-7-0) and have tallied only twenty-two goals on the season, so if Huet plays like he did on Saturday, another night ending in cheers will be his reward.

…and Notes

- The Belleville Bulls have been without Blackhawks’ prospect Shawn Lalonde (Red Rising’s #4) for the last five games with a shoulder injury. He could miss between 2-3 more weeks. Lalonde played nine games this season totaling thirteen points (5 goals, 8 assists) and nine penalty minutes.

- Patrick Kane received a call from Martin Havlat regarding EA Sports’ FIFA soccer game.

Jake Dowell Reassigned To Rockford

Jake Dowell was reassigned to the Rockford IceHogs. There has yet to be any report about the Jonathan Toews injury situation, but this could indicate that the captain is ready to return to the lineup vs. the Minnesota Wild. We will obviously find out more of this as it nears game-time. Both Toews and Brent Seabrook missed Sunday’s practice.

At the time this entry was published the IceHogs haven’t reported the transaction on their site, so Dowell could be receiving the Jack Skille treatment and be ‘recalled’ before the game.

Huet’s Shutout – Blackhawks 2, Predators 0

It’s always a dull game when the ‘Hawks face the Predators, but they presented more a challenge for the Blackhawks then they did the first time around. Nashville had some great scoring chances on many of their twenty-seven shots-on-goal – none of which Cristobal Huet let in – compared to the thirteen shots-on-goal faced in the previous match-up. The francophone led the team to a 2 – 0 win – Huet was given the meaningless award of first star of the game as well.

I’m not one for recaps, so I am going to focus on the play of the Man from France. The goals by Dustin Byfuglien and Andrew Ladd were great and all, but with the well-chronicled struggles of his, a shut-out for Huet at home is big – even if it’s against the Predators. This game doesn’t mean that Huet rediscovered his mojo, but the confidence that could be gained from this win is much needed for the Blackhawks’ success. Huet can’t be a head-case every time he takes the ice.

The lines were jumbled and thinned with Jonathan Toews and Brent Seabrook with their respective head injuries. Their work in the defensive zone was missed, which may be directly correlated to Nashville’s increased offensive presence. Huet had to come up with quite a few tough saves through the evening. There were a few occasions where Cristo was bailed out by the defense’s ability to clear the puck while he scrambled about the crease.

It was a good game by a team missing more than a few important bodies now. Two points were awarded, and now onto the next one.

I know I keep on saying this, but Coach Quenneville could start Huet in the Blackhawks next two games against the Wild and Predators (again) in order to build on the good outing.

Toews And Seabrook Out, Jake Dowell Recalled

Some not so good news, Jonathan Toews and Brent Seabrook will miss tonight’s game vs. Nashville. Neither played in the last game. Jordan Hendry will replace Seabrook in the lineup and Jake Dowell was recalled from Rockford to replace Toews. This recent turn of events should make tonight’s game a little more interesting – the first game played between the ‘Hawks and Predators was dull.

Dowell has seven points (1 goal, 6 assists) in eight games for the IceHogs. He will either center the third or fourth line.

Canucks 3, Blackhawks 2

Everything was going well last night vs. the Canucks until Jonathan Toews was pummeled into next week by defenseman Willie Mitchell. It was a clean open-ice hit early in the third period by the Canuck. Mitchell had just left the penalty box after the Blackhawks were yet again unable to convert with the two-man advantage before he lit up Toews. It appeared as though any wind the Blackhawks had in their sails died when Captain Toews, and Brent Seabrook left the game in the third as well.

Although being out played for most of the game, up to that point the Blackhawks managed a 2 – 1 lead. It was largely due to a solid game by Antti Niemi in goal. Vancouver was able to capitalize on the turn of events, however, scoring on the power play and on a Patrick Kane turnover in the defensive zone. It was the first game that the ‘Hawks had been out-shot this season.

Loses suck. They really suck when they are against at team like the Vancouver Canucks who seem to have the Blackhawks’ blood boiling ever since the one-ice melee late last season at the United Center. The ‘Hawks did boot them from the playoffs last year, but it would have been sweet to take the first game between the two clubs on the year.

Looking forward, if Toews or Seabrook miss any games due to the injuries sustained from last night’s match-up, the Blackhawks will be in trouble. Designating more bodies to the injured reserve would be a huge blow to the team. Early reports have stated that the two shouldn’t miss any playing time as a result of the injuries that forced them from last night’s game.

The Blackhawks host the Nashville Predators and Minnesota Wild at home in their next two games – two teams that are struggling to generate offense. I wouldn’t be surprised if Coach Quenneville opts to start Cristobal Huet in those favorable match-ups. If Huet performs well in front of the hostile home crowd, it would be a great confidence boost for a man that appears to lack any at all.

Huet could also get the start in Nashville next Thursday as well, with Niemi in net the next night at home vs. the Montreal Canadiens.

Niemi In Net vs. The Canucks

It looks as though Coach Quenneville is going to use Antti Niemi in net more. He has already decided to use the Fin in tomorrow night’s game at home against the Vancouver Canucks. It’s hard to say if this will be a trend or Quenneville giving Cristobal Huet some time off, hoping he can work through some of his woes in practice.

Quenneville on the issue:

“He’s earned the opportunity. I think he has played well and I think at one point in the year the competition from behind was something we were looking for.”

In other news…

Reunited and it feels so good.

Skille Reassigned To Rockford, Will Stay This Time

As he does after every Blackhawks game this season, Jack Skille was reassigned to Rockford, but this time it doesn’t look like he will return to the NHL roster for the next game vs. the Vancouver Canucks. The newly acquired Andrew Ebbett will take over for Skille on the fourth line and play on the wing.

Ebbett has more experience at this level, and had a productive season last year tallied thirty-two points in forty-eight games (8 goals, 24 assists) with the Anaheim Ducks. The other side of this story is that Ebbett is a cheaper option at $475,000 to Skille’s $1.25M.
