Rumor Mill Monday

What better way to start off the week then reading some trade rumors. Bellow are a few recent rumors that have surfaced regarding the Blackhawks in the last week or so.

- Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun believes that Brian Campbell could be shopped at the end of the season in order to free up the cap-space need to sign the Big Three – Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith.

- Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet.ca noted that the ‘Hawks will have to move two or three bodies to make room for the Big Three. Patrick Sharp, Kris Versteeg and Dustin Byfuglien are the names mentioned in this article.

Red Rising’s Take: The Blackhawks aren’t going to worry about creating the cap-space to lock up the Big Three until the end of the season. Campbell will remain a ‘Hawk after this season due to the size and length of his current contract. Sharp, Versteeg and Byfuglien are viable options, however.

It will be a tough decision to make when the time comes, but it will need to be made since the Blackhawks have about $42.5M tied up in twelve players next year. Of the players listed above, Byfuglien should be the first to go. There would be many teams around the league that would love you have the big assed forward, and the organization could replace him with the likes of Kyle Beach or Akim Aliu.

Sharp and Versteeg on the other hand offer more than just a body in the crease, yet both could still find themselves on another team in the summer of 2010. The Blackhawks could also look to the blue-line to free up some cap-space. Cam Barker would garner some interest, and if Brent Sopel can put together a solid season the ‘Hawks would have an easier time ridding themselves of his contract.

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com reported that Pat Brisson, the agent of Kane and Toews, will sit down with Stan Bowman about extending their contracts.

Red Rising’s Take: This little bit of news is nice to hear, but I doubt that either will be sign an extension prior to the end of the season.

- There have already been a slew of opinions about Cristobal Huet, his slow start and what to do with him if he doesn’t snap out of this funk. Yesterday, Tim Sassone of the Daily Herald covered most of the options the organization can take with Huet. They can keep playing him, send him down to Rockford, play him on the road and Antti Niemi at home or trade him.

Red Rising’s Take: Trading Huet will be hard for the same reasons as Campbell, and sending him to Rockford will never happen. The only alteration made to the current goaltending situation will be an increase in starts for Niemi if Coach Quenneville grows tired of watching Huet single-handedly lose games.

Andrew Ebbett Claimed On Waivers, Skille Recalled

The Blackhawks claimed forward Andrew Ebbett off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks this afternoon. This is yet another move made during the Stan Bowman era where he acquired another borderline AHL/NHL talent. The addition of Ebbett indicates that the organization expects Ben Eager out longer with post concussion problems.

Also the Blackhawks recalled Jack Skille from the IceHogs once again. The practice of reassigning him to Rockford and recalling him to Chicago will continue till players start returning from the injured reserve.

Good Outing For Huet In Nashville, Still No. 1

Last night Cristobal Huet saved twelve of the thirteen shots the Nashville Predators threw at him. The lone goal Huet let in was kicked in by teammate Niklas Hjalmarsson early in the second frame. Barring Hjalmarsson’s blunder, Huet had a solid night. The Predators’ didn’t offer much in the way of an offensive challenge, but he came up with saves when needed.

I’ve said this before; the Blackhawks’ don’t need to have stellar goaltending to come away with the win, and that point has been made evident in the seven games on the season. When a team out-shoots their opponent, it takes a lot of pressure off of the defense and goalie – the Blackhawks have done this in every game so far. On the season, they have totaled 255 shots (36.4 shots per game), and their opponents have tabulated 122 shots (17.4 shots per game) – that’s a +133 shot differential.

I think every goalie in the league would consider facing 17.4 shots per game an easy night. If Huet were playing adequate at best, his save percentage wouldn’t be so low. So it bothered me when I found out that there were still people coming up with excuses as to Huet’s early season woes.

I read a statement after the Flames’ game, where he let up three goals in less than a minute, declaring that any idiot could tell that the defenses was responsible for Huet’s horrible outing. Yes, there are times where the defense will breakdown or there will be a costly turnover in the defensive zone, but it is the goalies job to come up with big saves when those instances happen. Huet wasn’t able to do that vs. Calgary, so don’t defend the guy when he sucked.

With all that being said, as much as I or any other fan becomes frustrated with the inconsistent play of Huet, he is the No. 1 guy in Chicago. Coach Quenneville will keep trotting Huet out there since Antti Niemi is a long way from posing a real threat to the francophone. I do, however, think that Quenneville opted to use Huet against the anemic Predators’ offense, so he could build off of a sure thing – a 3-1 win in Nashville.

By the way, I don’t miss the red pads.

News And Notes

- UPDATE: Early reports state that Antti Niemi will start in net tonight vs. the Oilers. Niemi and Cristobal Huet will always split time when the ‘Hawks play two games in two days. However, this is a missed opportunity for Huet to silence his critics facing off against the man some Blackhawks’ fans yearn for, Nikolai Khabibulin.

- Jack Skille was reassigned to Rockford for the second time yesterday, but could be back for tonight’s game. The shuttling of Skille between the Blackhawks and IceHogs is due to his $1.25M salary.

UPDATE: Skille was recalled.

- In the first five games of the season the Blackhawks have out-shot their opponent 187 (10.16 shooting-percentage) to 109 (13.76 shooting-percentage), and have won the battle for shots-on-goal in every game so far.

- Jonathan Toews is off to another slow start tallying only one assist on the season, but he is excelling in another area of the game. Toews leads all Blackhawks’ centers with 54 face-off wins and a 60% face-off win-percentage.

- Team Canada: TSN.ca debates a few things regarding the Canadian Olympic team uncluding which Blackhawk is most likely to make the team – Jonathan Toews or Patrick Sharp. I’d take Toews, but two of the three boys at TSN chose Sharpie.

History Made, Blackhawks Comeback From 5 – 0 Deficit

Well, I was set to write an entry all about how Troy Brouwer would need to be the guy to step up and provide a physical game for the Blackhawks with Adam Burish on the IR and Ben Eager struggling with post-concussion symptoms. He filled that role tonight. Brouwer had some big hits throughout the game, and squared off against Jarome Iginla. Brouwer left the ice with a bloody noggin as a result – still the act fired up the crowd even more after the fourth unanswered goal by Dave Bolland.

There were quite a few times where I thought about changing the TV station and watching something else after the Blackhawks were down 3 – 0, but I figured nothing else was on. If you stuck this one out like me, your patience was rewarded with a 6 – 5 overtime victory over the Calgary Flames. I am still amazed at how the Blackhawks pulled this one off. The team played horrible hockey for the first seventeen minutes of the game. Huet was porous – he let in three goals in under a minute, thus was pulled. It’s becoming hard to argue that Huet’s job as No. 1 is safe.

Antti Niemi started in net, letting in two goals out of the gate. Rene Bourque’s goal was too much for him on the glove side, but the trickler by Olli Jokinen was really ugly. It’s hard to come off the bench cold, but Niemi was solid after that, however. The Flames were held scoreless for the remainder of the night.

The whole team was playing uninspired hockey until John Madden scored late in the first period. That and whatever Coach Quenneville screamed at them during intermission sparked the comeback.

Patrick Kane led the charge in the second period with a quick wrist-shot just under the blue-line, and tallied assists on the next two goals from the Blackhawks. The three point night for Kane ties him with Patrick Sharp for the team lead in points with seven (3 goals, 4 assists). With Jonathan Toews off to another slow start, Kane has picked up the slack – he was all over the offensive zone and making great passes.

Sharp’s redirected shot in the third period to tie the game, and Brent Seabrook’s game winning goal in overtime finished out the greatest comeback in the Blackhawks’ eighty-three year history. Even the iron ‘stached Quenneville broke a smile when this one was over.

There may never be another game like this for the franchise, and yours truly is glad he didn’t turn this game off.

Flames Tonight, Improvement Needed and Skille Recalled

The Blackhawks will have to play better then they did against the Colorado Avalanche if they want to live up to the pre-season hype. They won’t get away with the sloppy play that led to the 4-3 shootout win on Saturday – the Calgary Flames are 4-1-0 (8 points) and will capitalize on mistakes such as turnovers in the defensive zone. Last year the ‘Hawks owned the Jarome Iginla and company sweeping the regular season series and taking the first round playoff bout in six games.

The Flames play a scrappy brand of hockey – with Adam Burish on the mend and Ben Eager able return to the lineup tonight, the ‘Hawks skilled players could have a tough night ahead of them. It won’t be an easy night for guys like Patrick Kane, Kris Versteeg and Jonathan Toews.

This is the style of play the ‘Hawks miss with Eager on the shelf (a nice hit on Mike Cammalleri and takedown of Adam Pardy second later):

Special teams is another area that should be stressed tonight. The Flames enter the United Center holding the best power play in the league at 46.7%, but the Blackhawks haven’t been as successful. In three of the four games this season, the power play unit was unable to convert with a two-man advantage. That is unacceptable.

A decent surprise so far is that Brent Sopel hasn’t sucked. He has done a good job in the defensive zone clearing pucks and blocking shots. Sopel has been on the third pairing of defensemen, and has seen time on the penalty kill unit.

Another note is that former Chicago winger Rene Bourque leads the Flames with seven points (3 goals, 4 assists). They like him a lot up there.

UPDATE: Jack Skille was recalled just one day after being reassigned to Rockford.

UPDATE: Ben Eager concussion reports have been confirmed by Coach Quenneville, and he will be out indefinitely. I plan to write more on this issue after the game or tomorrow morning. Stay tuned.

Back To Rockford Goes Skille

Yep, Jack Skille’s recent stint with the Blackhawk’s lasted only one game. His services were returned to Rockford once again after 5:22 of ice-time on the fourth line. The Blackhawks’ roster currently sits one forward short of rolling out four complete lines, but Ben Eager is able to come off the IR for tomorrow nights against the Calgary Flames.

Skille’s stock, since being picked seventh overall pick in the 2005 entry draft, has fallen quite a bit to say the least. In his time on the Blackhawks roster Skille has looked out of place, but in the few pre-season games he was able to suit up for this year, he skated well and crashed the net affectively.

That really wasn’t the case last night. Still, it would be premature to write the twenty-two year old off as a potentially effective NHL hockey player with only twenty-five games to his name as a Blackhawk. I think Skille will be a serviceable talent in the league, but with the depth at forward in the organization his chance to make an impact won’t come this season with the ‘Hawks.

The Avalanche game won’t be Skille’s only cup of coffee this season, however. If the current injury trend continues, his return will be sooner rather than later.

Skille Recalled, Smolenak Waived

Jack Skille

Jack Skille

Jack Skille will suit up for the Blackhawks tonight at the United Center vs. the Colorado Avalanche – he was recalled from the IceHogs this morning.

The organization also waived winger Radek Smolenak who was eventually picked up by his former team, Tampa Bay Lightning. I guess he didn’t impress anyone when he lost a fight with Brad May and missing a shot on an open net against the Red Wings.

Skille will take over Ben Eager’s role on the fourth line tonight. He would have been called up sooner if he wasn’t injured in pre-season play, and he has yet to see ice-time in a game for the IceHogs yet. Don’t expect to see much of Skille tonight, and his time with the Blackhawks might be short lived.

Bickell Is Rockford Bound

Well, it looks like the foreseeable future is now. Bryan Bickell will return to the IceHogs after filling in for one game. He is expected to be in Hamilton for their game tonight.

This would likely mean that the Blackhawks expect Dave Bolland to be in tomorrow night’s lineup at home vs. the Colorado Avalanche, and that they plan to activate Ben Eager from the IR for Monday’s game vs. the Calgary Flames. Eager’s stint on the injured reserve was retroactive to last Saturday.
