Michael Frolik acquired from Panthers

About an hour before last night’s game with the Edmonton Oilers the Jack Skille era with the Blackhawks came to an end. He was traded to the Florida Panthers with forwards Hugh Jessiman (AHL) and David Pacan (OHL) for forward Michael Frolik and goaltender Alexander Salak (SEL).

And the peasants rejoiced.

As the Blackhawks played themselves out the top eight in the West and the trade deadline neared, it became apparent Stan Bowman would shake-up the roster one way or another. Frolik has scored 20-plus goals in his first two seasons in the league, is top-six talent and will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

With the addition of the 22-year-old Czech – and subtraction of Skille – the Blackhawks are an improved squad. One step closer to being a true contender to repeat. Now Bowman will need to address the blue line – a third-pairing, penalty-killing defender at a nice price.

Roster spots at forward still available, and two more cut

Yet again, another round of cuts hit Hawks’ training camp today. Forward Hugh Jessiman was assigned to Rockford (AHL) after clearing waivers, and Swedish forward Ludvig Rensfeldt was returned to Brynas J20 (SuperElite). The Blackhawks training camp roster stands at 31 players before their fourth (first un-televised) exhibition game in Pittsburgh tonight.

With four more pre-season games left, the competition for the few remaining roster spots at forward is still wide open. Ex-Oilers Fernando Pisani and Ryan Potulny have played well enough to secure roster spots, prospects Igor Makarov and Jeremy Morin are making bids to stick around, and one-time lock, Viktor Stalberg, might have played well enough to make the IceHogs.

Training camp roster as it stands –

Forwards (17) – Kyle Beach, Bryan Bickell, Dave Bolland, Troy Brouwer, Jake Dowell, Marian Hossa, Patrick Kane, Tomas Kopecky, Igor Makarov, Jeremy Morin, Fernando Pisani, Ryan Potulny, Patrick Sharp, Jack Skille, Ben Smith, Viktor Stalberg, Jonathan Toews

Defensemen (10) – Nick Boynton, Brian Campbell, Brian Connelly, Jassen Cullimore, Jordan Hendry, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Duncan Keith, Nick Leddy, John Scott, Brent Seabrook

Goalies (4) – Corey Crawford, Alec Richards, Hannu Toivonen, Marty Turco

Cristobal Huet and others clear waivers

Huet's natural habitat

Stan Bowman was finally able to sweep the Cristobal Huet problem under the rug. To the surprised of no one, he cleared waivers making it possible for him to play in Switzerland. As rumored, Huet is set to join HC Fribourg-Gotteron SA of the Swiss National League A on loan. His $5.6 million annual salary will no longer count against the Hawks’ salary cap, as it will be stashed in the AHL.

He’s an NHL-caliber goaltender that became victim to the contract he signed two summers ago. On the bright side, he’ll be playing Switzerland – where he played prior to the NHL – and will earn another salary on top of the $5.6 million.

In two seasons with the Blackhawks, Huet played 89 games with a 46-29-8 record, a 2.51 goals-against average and a .902 save percentage.

Forwards Evan Brophey and Jeffe Taffe also cleared waivers today, and have been assigned toRockford. The IceHogs’ training camp is already in progress. Hugh Jessiman was also placed on waivers earlier today. We’ll find out his fate tomorrow.

Training camp roster as it stands -

Forwards (19) – Kyle Beach, Bryan Bickell, Dave Bolland, Troy Brouwer, Jake Dowell, Marian Hossa, Hugh Jessiman, Patrick Kane, Tomas Kopecky, Igor Makarov, Jeremy Morin, Fernando Pisani, Ryan Potulny, Ludvig Rensfeldt, Patrick Sharp, Jack Skille, Ben Smith, Viktor Stalberg, Jonathan Toews

Defensemen (10) – Nick Boynton, Brian Campbell, Brian Connelly, Jassen Cullimore, Jordan Hendry, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Duncan Keith, Nick Leddy, John Scott, Brent Seabrook

Bryan Bickell inks three-year deal

Stan Bowman can cross another item off his to-do list by re-signing forward Bryan Bickell to a three-year deal worth $1,625,000. He is slated to make $500,000 in 2010-11, $525,000 in 2011-12 and $600,000 in 2012-13, which is a cap hit of $541,666. It’s a small raise compared to the $500,000 Bickell earned last season, but he’s guaranteed a spot on the Blackhawks’ roster because of his price tag. I thought he was going to get $550,000 per year. Every penny counts.

Bickell could have a Ladd-like role down the road, but should begin the season on the fourth line. In fourteen regular season games Hawks last year, Bickell had three goals with one assist. He also skated in four post-season matches.

Next, Bowman and company have Jordan Hendry and Antti Niemi to take care of. Hendry will get a deal done with the same cap hit he had last season ($625,000), which should be possible because the Hawks didn’t tender him a qualifying offer making him an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

With Niemi, on the other hand, it’s difficult to foresee what will happen. Bowman is making the extra effort to re-sign his goaltender by signing guys like Bickell to minimum deals, and trading away inexpensive pieces such as Marty Reasoner. Anything over a cap hit of $2,500,000 could force the Blackhawks to walk, or trade Tomas Kopecky ($1,200,000).

Two more signed

The Hawks signed restricted free agent Nathan Davis and free agent forward Hugh Jessiman to one-year deals worth $500,000. Both will spend the 2010-11 season with Rockford where they are to earn significantly less (Davis – $75,000; Jessiman – $105,000) in the AHL as they have two-way deals. Jessiman was selected 12th overall in the 2003 entry draft, and has yet to play a game in the NHL.

Changes have been reflected on our In the Organization page above.
