Roster spots to be had at forward

With the Blackhawks’ roster virtually locked up in net (Turco and Crawford) and on the blue line (Keith, Seabrook, Campbell, Hjalmarsson, Boynton, Hendry and Scott – with Vishnevskiy on the outside looking in), the competition at training camp is happening at forward. The Hawks’ top-six are set, but there are spots to be won as a bottom-six forward.

Who’s locked in?

Brouwer – Toews – Kane
Sharp – Bolland – Hossa
Stalberg – ??? – ???
Bickell – ??? – Kopecky
???

Who has a realistic shot?

Kyle Beach – Top prospect in the Blackhawks’ system will play his first game in the NHL sometime this season, but will his time come when training camp breaks? You can’t deny the kid is talented, but he’s “in need of a serious attitude adjustment.” Spending more time in Rockford could do some good, but he’s a Bowman favorite.

Igor Makarov – The 23-year-old Russian forward won the hearts of everyone in attendance at the training camp shindig over the weekend, and has a legitimate shot at stealing a roster spot from any player on this list. Makarov dazzled in prospect camp two years ago, but faded into the drab background of the KHL as a fourth-liner since. In 51 games between St. Petersburg and Moscow, he score five goals with four assists.

Fernando Pisani – If healthy, he’ll easily make the team out of training camp. Pisani will provide a veteran leadership on one of the bottom lines, and will help on the penalty kill. That being said, his skills and offensive production have tailed off significantly since he was a playoff hero for the Oilers in 2006.

Ryan Potulny – A nice off-season signing at a nice price, and could fill the role of third- or fourth-line center with the Hawks this season. At 26, Potulny has a small upside, and a scoring touch (15 last year). His plus/minus rating of minus-21 was indicative of playing on the last place Oilers.

Jack Skille – This will undoubtedly be the last shot for Skille to make the club that drafted him five years ago with the seventh overall pick. Really, there is nothing new I can tell you about Skille. His high water mark is as the Kris Versteeg replacement on the third line, but being assigned to Rockford is a possibility.

Jake Dowell – A spot on the Blackhawks was as good as his before ex-Oilers Pisani and Potulny were brought into the fold. Dowell still has an outside shot to make the team, but it appears as though he’s destine to begin the season in the AHL for the fifth time. The only thing he has going for him is that he’s a natural center.

Blackhawks recall eight before semi-final match-up

A few days ago the Blackhawks recalled goaltender Corey Crawford from their AHL affiliate, and today the organization added eight more players to the roster that were previously stationed in Rockford. Of the recalled, take not of forward Kyle Beach and defensemen Shawn Lalonde and little known Brian Connelly. None of the players recalled today will lace-up for the semi-finals, but they are going to only see time in practice. The rest are forwards Jake Dowell and Jack Skille, defensemen Jassen Cullimore and Danny Richmond and goaltender Hannu Toivonen. Nothing to be excited about there.

Olympic Hockey Day One, And Two Sent To Purgatory

Of the only teams that matter to Blackhawk fans (USA, Canada and Slovakia) on the first day of competition Team USA and Team Canada are in actions. The Americans will play Switzerland and the Canadians will play Norway. Patrick Kane will lineup with Zach Parise and Paul Stastny for Team USA. Jonathan Toews will lineup at center between Brenden Morrow and Jarome Iginla for Team Canada – that should be interesting. The internet connection at the hotel blows. It’s taking to long to find anything definitive regarding Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith, but I can’t see them not suiting up for any game.

Back to Purgatory They Go –

Bryan Bickell and Jake Dowell were reassigned to Rockford after Sunday’s game in Columbus. Both Bickell and Dowell got on the scoresheet in that game. Bickell scored a goal, and Dowell had one goal and one assist in the 5-4 shootout victory. Subsequently, Adam Hobson was reassigned to the Toledo Walleye today.

Dowell Recalled From Rockford

Thought I posted this earlier… Jake Dowell was recalled from Rockford this afternoon to replace Marian Hossa in tonight’s lineup. Hossa took a hit to the head from Colby Armstrong in last night’s game vs. Atlanta. Dowell should return to the IceHogs following tonight’s game. John Madden was moved to the injured reserve to make the move possible.

Blackhawks Have Internal Options To Fill-In For Bolland

Just when the Blackhawks were getting healthy and able to roll out a lineup at full strength, Dave Bolland’s lower-back problem could no longer be ignored. The surgery to repair a herniated disk was successful, but now that Bolland will be out between three to four months recovering a replacement is needed.

It’ll be hard to replace a player like him, but initially the organization will hope someone on the roster can fill the void. Yesterday, Stan Bowman said:

“I think we’ve got to sort it out internally first and see what we have. We’ve got some guys who kind of deserve the chance to see how they can play and see how that goes before jumping into anything else. That’s the approach for now and we’ll see how it works.”

A handful of players that can be considered for the role of second line center, and they are Patrick Sharp, John Madden, Kris Versteeg, Tomas Kopecky, Andrew Ebbett and Jake Dowell (currently in Rockford). Ebbett could be given a shot to replace Bolland out of the gate. I’ve been critical of him a time or two, but they guy did tally thirty-two points in forty-eight games for the Ducks last season. So there has to be something there. Right?

The Versteeg experiment at center lasted a little over one game. Coach Quenneville shuffled the lines during the Kings game, and moved him to the wing and put Ebbett on the second line at center – replacing Kopecky. Ebbett played reasonably well, and scored a fluky goal that bounced off his chest and into the net. Kopecky was demoted to the fourth line and keeps proving to be useless.

Sharp and Madden could eventually see time as the second line center, but Quenneville likes them in the role they are in now. I think Dowell would be recalled before either Sharp or Madden are used in that role. Any internal options Bowman has will be exhausted before he resorts to trading for suitable replacement for Bolland as the team is right up against the salary cap.

The Blackhawks play Colorado at home tonight, so we won’t have to wait long to see who Quenneville uses in Bolland’s spot.

In other news: Marian Hossa will take another step in his rehab. He will start participating in full contact drills either Thursday or Friday.

Blackhawks Are Fine Despite Few Issues

The Blackhawks beat the Minnesota Wild 3-1 last night. It was Martin Havlat’s regular season return to the United Center and was held silent by his old club. The ‘Hawks were able to put this win over the Wild together due to solid goaltending from Cristobal Huet, a couple key rebounds in front of the net and a highlight goal from Patrick Kane in the third period.

With Brent Seabrook and Jonathan Toews missing the last two games with their respective head injuries, the Blackhawks have been able to come away with two victories and four points. Last night was just another win over a weaker Western Conference team. The current stretch of the schedule seems to make the Blackhawks’ problems appear to be not so bad.

If the ‘Hawks were playing tougher opponents, however, would the out come of the last two games differ? Would Seabrook and Toews stepped up and played through their concussion-like symptoms? Would Huet have been good enough to come away with just one goal scored on him in 120 minutes? The great thing is that we don’t have to worry about any of that. Despite all the team’s issues, the Blackhawks are first in the Central Division with fifteen points and a record of 7-3-1.

The biggest beneficiary of the Blackhawks current winning streak has to be The Man from France – as Eddie O tends to call him. Huet has seen his goals-against-average drop to a very respectable 2.49 on the year. It’s always nice to see better numbers, but at this point of the season the forward momentum he gets from winning is more important.

The Blackhawks don’t play another game until Thursday in Nashville with another on Friday at home hosting Les Canadiens. Coach Quenneville should start different goalies in back-to-back games. So what game does Huet get? I’m going to stick by my guns and say that he starts in Nashville, and that Antti Niemi will get the nod vs. Montreal.

There is still no timetable as to when Seabrook and Toews (and Ben Eager) will return, or if one is closer than the other. Forcing them to return to the ice before the concussion-like symptoms have regressed could be detrimental to career of each player. Seeing that Seabrook and Toews are the present and future of the franchise, the right decision will be made here.

In other news, the Blackhawks reassigned Jake Dowell to Rockford. Once again, Dowell could return to the NHL team before Thursday’s game if Toews is still recovering from concussion-like symptoms.

Huet To Start, Dowell Recalled And More

News…

- Yep, Jake Dowell has been recalled by the Blackhawks. This indicates that Jonathan Toews will miss another game with concussion-like symptoms. Nothing has been reported on the matter, or whither Brent Seabrook will miss tonight’s game as well – Jordan Hendry would replace him again if that is the case.

Update: Toews and Seabrook are out.

- Once again starting in net for the Blackhawks will be Cristobal Huet. Everyone is hoping that he can build on the shutout victory over the Predators. The Minnesota Wild are winless on the road (0-7-0) and have tallied only twenty-two goals on the season, so if Huet plays like he did on Saturday, another night ending in cheers will be his reward.

…and Notes

- The Belleville Bulls have been without Blackhawks’ prospect Shawn Lalonde (Red Rising’s #4) for the last five games with a shoulder injury. He could miss between 2-3 more weeks. Lalonde played nine games this season totaling thirteen points (5 goals, 8 assists) and nine penalty minutes.

- Patrick Kane received a call from Martin Havlat regarding EA Sports’ FIFA soccer game.

Jake Dowell Reassigned To Rockford

Jake Dowell was reassigned to the Rockford IceHogs. There has yet to be any report about the Jonathan Toews injury situation, but this could indicate that the captain is ready to return to the lineup vs. the Minnesota Wild. We will obviously find out more of this as it nears game-time. Both Toews and Brent Seabrook missed Sunday’s practice.

At the time this entry was published the IceHogs haven’t reported the transaction on their site, so Dowell could be receiving the Jack Skille treatment and be ‘recalled’ before the game.

Toews And Seabrook Out, Jake Dowell Recalled

Some not so good news, Jonathan Toews and Brent Seabrook will miss tonight’s game vs. Nashville. Neither played in the last game. Jordan Hendry will replace Seabrook in the lineup and Jake Dowell was recalled from Rockford to replace Toews. This recent turn of events should make tonight’s game a little more interesting – the first game played between the ‘Hawks and Predators was dull.

Dowell has seven points (1 goal, 6 assists) in eight games for the IceHogs. He will either center the third or fourth line.

Opening Roster Set

The Blackhawks made their final roster cuts this afternoon, and they decided to carry three goalies to start the season. Yup, Cristobal Huet, Antti Niemi and Corey Crawford will start the year on the NHL roster. Niemi should get one of the starts in Finland seeing that he is the only Finnish player on the roster, and Huet will get the other.

Sent to Rockford were forwards Bryan Bickell, Evan Brophey, Jake Dowell, Rob Klinkhammer and Jack Skille. The newly acquired Radek Smolenak will take the final roster spot left open by an injury to Adam Burish. With the choice of carrying Smolenak on the roster, Quenneville decided to go with a little more grit rather than skill.

Kris Versteeg and Dustin Byfuglien saw action in yesterday’s game, so injuries that kept them out of a few games each shouldn’t be a problem.

Burish and Marian Hossa were placed on the Injured Reserve as expected.
