Bickell Reassigned, And Marcus Kruger At The WJCs

- Bryan Bickell was reassigned to the Rockford IceHogs this morning. It could be a while till he is recalled again. Kris Versteeg and Niklas Hjalmarsson were both on the ice at today’s practice. I would expect that both would recover from whatever ailed them before tomorrow night’s game in Dallas. Bickell has played twelve games with the Blackhawks this season, and has one goal and one assist.

- Chris Kuc reported that Adam Burish skated before today’s practice, and Cristobal Huet will start in net against the Stars.

- In yesterday’s Swedish 7-3 victory over Austria at the World Junior Championships, prospect Marcus Kruger had one assist and a plus/minus rating of +3. In two games played in the tournament Kruger has two assists, two penalty minutes and a plus/minus rating of +4. Sweden’s next game will be tomorrow against the Russians.

Blackhawks News And Notes; World Junior’s Start Today

News…

- Bryan Bickell was recalled (again) this morning, and will be in Nashville for tonight’s game against the Predators. Per usual, this means Ben Eager will be held out of the lineup with an undisclosed ‘upper-body’ injury. Ben Eager and Cam Barker will return to the lineup, but Kris Versteeg and Niklas Hjalmarsson will be out of the lineup due to feeling sick.

- The Rockford IceHogs recalled goaltender Alec Richards, forwards Adam Hobson and Maxime Tanguay (non-rostered) from the Toledo Walleye.

…and Notes

- The World Junior Hockey Championships start today, and the lone Blackhawks prospect to participate in the tournament is Sweden’s Marcus Kruger. For those of you who have the NHL Network you can catch Sweden play the Czech Republic at 5:30pm Central – the game will be played earlier in the day. Shawn Lalonde and Dylan Olsen were cut from the Canadian camp.

Looking For Answers – Blackhawks 1, Sabres 2

Patrick Lalime was prepared for the Blackhawks. He saved thirty-nine of the forty shots faced, and earned his first win of the season. It was poised to be the game the Blackhawks would break out of their scoring funk when the Sabres opted to go with Lalime over Ryan Miller, but as we know now that wasn’t the case. If you are a Cubs’ fan it’s a similar feeling – watching the Cubs’ hitters make a rookie pitcher, fresh out of AA, look like a Cy Young winner. The Blackhawks offense made the Sabres’ backup look great in net.

Forty shots on net is a nice stat to look at, but the shot quality has to get better. Looking at last night’s shot chart a majority of the Blackhawks’ shot came from above the circles. Too many times a defenseman shoots aimlessly from the blue line with little or no traffic in front of the net, and goalies see the puck clearly since it left the defenseman’s stick.

It’s not just the lack of quality scoring chances that has stymied the Blackhawks’ offense. Individual players and teams have stepped up their efforts against the Blackhawks, and that trend continued in Buffalo. Coach Quenneville is searching for answers, and in the short-term he has resorted to shuffling lines.

According to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, Quenneville was at it again playing with his line combinations at today’s practice. So don’t be surprised if you see Kris Versteeg on the third line, or Patrick Kane reunited with Jonathan Toews on the first line without Marian Hossa on the other wing. I like that Quenneville is being proactive, but lines used in the last two games (Versteeg – Toews – Hossa; Brouwer – Sharp – Kane; Byfuglien – Madden – Ladd; Eager – Fraser – Kopecky) were ideal for me.

Rangers Visit For Original Six Match-Up

The Rangers don’t have much going for then right now outside of Marian Gaborik and Henrik Lundqvist – my favorite goalie in the league. Original Six match-ups are always awesome, but this game doesn’t carry as much weight as it would if the Blackhawks played the Red Wings or Bruins – this season at least – as the Rangers have fallen fast after a quick start to the season.

Coming out of one of the most intense games of the season, everything is not all gravy for the Blackhawks. In their last five games, not one game was won in regulation. The problem is that the Blackhawks aren’t scoring goals at the rate they should be. In those five games, the Blackhawks have only eight goals. During this stretch only five of the possible ten points have been earned.

The absence of Dave Bolland from the lineup has become apparent, and could directly have something to do with offensive regression. Coach Quenneville has been deliberately searching for a replacement as the second-line center since Bolland opted for surgery. Right now that man Patrick Sharp. Kris Versteeg did okay in the role, but is better suited as a playmaking winger.

In Pittsburgh, Quenneville skated Versteeg on the same line as Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa. He will flirt tonight with the brilliant idea of demoting the useless Dustin Byfuglien to the checking line, and replacing him with Troy Brouwer on the second line with Sharp and Patrick Kane. Those are two top lines I can get behind.

A couple other lineup notes for tonight’s game is that Cristobal Huet will start in net and Tomas Kopecky will return to the fourth line.

Mission Accomplished: Successful Circus Trip Over

It’s time to take down the big top. The six-game circus road trip is over, and the Blackhawks attained nine of the possible twelve points (4-1-1) on the trip. Losing to the Ducks in regulation and to the Kings in a shootout wasn’t the ideal way to end the trip, but we should all feel great about the November this team had. Don’t let anyone else convince you otherwise.

The other day I wrote how the line combinations will see some stability now that Marian Hossa is in the lineup. Well, Coach Quenneville made me look stupid again by moving Patrick Kane off the first line with Hossa and Jonathan Toews in the third period. The idea of having Kane, Toews and Hossa on one line is nice, but it is more like Quenneville to spread out the top talent among a few lines. Opponents will have to resort to more than the tactic of using their checking line against the Blackhawks’ first line.

On his blog yesterday, Tim Sassone reported that the changes we saw in Saturday’s game in Los Angeles should keep – at least at the start of tonight’s game at home vs. the Columbus Blue Jackets. Patrick Sharp will join Hossa and Toews on the first line, and Kane will return to the right side on the second line with Dustin Byfuglien and Kris Versteeg.

How long these combinations will last is obviously up to Quenneville. I like that he is open to change, and is willing to see what works and doesn’t work with the group of players on the roster. Any tinkering will solely take place among the six players on the first two lines. Quenneville is content with the checking line of Andrew Ladd, John Madden and Troy Brouwer, and will keep the three together as long as he can. The Blackhawks’ fourth line is set as well.

Alternative Jersey

Alternative Jersey

In net tonight will be Cristobal Huet. At this point it should be a given that any game that isn’t played on back-to-back nights Huet will start. His 2.12 goals-against average ranks fourth in the league with goalies that have twenty or more starts on the season. I’m still not Huet’s biggest fan, but he has been what the Blackhawks need him to be – have the ability to stop enough of the 24.2 (lowest average in the league) shots-on-goal-against to keep the team in the game. Huet has done it well.

Tonight the Blackhawks will debut their new alternative jersey. It’s a variation of the Winter Classic sweater, which I never really liked. White lacing that is all the rage in NHL jersey fashion will replace the black at the base of the v-neck, and the shoulder crests are rather stylized in red, white and a little bit of black. The shoulder crest doesn’t do much for me. They should have stuck with the crests they have on the home and away jerseys.

Kaner Turned 21 – Blackhawks 7, Flames 1

The Calgary Flames must hate the Blackhawks more then they did going into tonight’s match-up. The ‘Hawks swept the season series last year, knocked them out of last year’s playoffs in the first round, and came back from five down in a historic victory earlier this season. Tonight, in the first of the six-game circus road trip the ‘Hawks won big over the Flame, 7-1.

First Period – Cristobal Huet started they game off well by making some great saves in the first period, and there were some great instances of back-checking by the Blackhawks that successfully disrupted the Flames in the defensive zone. Niklas Hjalmarsson spoiled a good scoring chance for Rene Bourque as he knocked the puck to Huet while was falling to the ice.

Troy Brouwer keeps winning my heart with his play in front of the net, and his goal off on his third consecutive rebound is just one example of how he is becoming the best on the roster in that spot. In the last five games, Brouwer has three goals and three assists.

Second Period – Olli Jokinen came out of the first intermission scoring up high on Huet with a man-advantage, but Hjalmarsson answered with a huge hit on Bourque seconds later. The Blackhawks were able to rattle off five unanswered goals to break the short-lived tie. Two of the period’s goals were from Kris Versteeg, one from Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien and Patrick Kane each. Huet was solid for the rest of the period after the early goal.

Third Period – It would have been easy for the Blackhawks to coast for the rest of the game with a five-goal lead, but they kept the pressure on the Flames. Huet made some more key saves, one in particular from Jokinen on his glove side. To top it off, Tomas Kopecky set up Ben Eager for his first goal of the season.

Rumor Mill: Could The Big Three Sign Extensions Soon?

Toews and Kane

Toews and Kane

- Pierre LeBrun of ESPN reported that Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane are close to signing contract extensions. LeBrun is tossing a two-week window for their respective extension to be signed.

- Chris Kuc confirmed the news that the Blackhawks are close to signing Toews and Kane, and that an announcement could come very soon. He also reports that Duncan Keith is close to singing an extension as well.

Red Rising’s Take: We know the potential end of the season situation of Toews, Kane and Keith all too well. It’s hard not to get excited the more press the story receives. Locking up the big three before the end of the season will ease so many minds in the organization and the fan base.

I have no doubt in my mind that Stan Bowman will do whatever it takes to keep Toews, Kane and Keith in the organization. If the news comes today or further down the road, the task of creating salary-cap space for next year is immanent. Kris Versteeg, Patrick Sharp, Dustin Byfuglien and Cam Barker are all candidates to be moved at the end of the season.

- Tim Sassone is on a mission to convince his readers that Stan Bowman is on the verge of trading for a center to replace the injured Dave Bolland. He mentioned the name of Matt Cullen, currently of the Carolina Hurricanes. Sassone believes Cullen is the type of player Bowman would target in a trade – a reliable veteran who a contract that expires at the end of the season.

Red Rising’s Take: It looks like Andrew Ebbett might not be the answer to replace Bolland to center the second line – he was scratched from the lineup Sunday vs. the Sharks. The Blackhawks will look to fill the role internally. Sassone’s right though in one aspect, if the organization were to trade for a replacement it would be veteran center with an expiring contract.

Big Win – Blackhawks 4, Sharks 3 (OT)

Last night the Blackhawks didn’t play their best game, but still won the game in overtime, with a score of 4-3, against the best team in the Western Conference. The Blackhawks were sloppy, though. Too many turnovers in the neutral- and defensive-zone, and the Sharks were able to disrupt the ‘Hawks in the offensive zone way too easily. Frustrating at times, but the Blackhawks came out on top in this match-up.

Aside from the first two minutes of the second period, Cristobal Huet was great in net. He came up with important saves at even strength and on the penalty kill. Brent Sopel was and has been good (man, that was hard to write). Niklas Hjalmarsson was solid and bailed out Brian Campbell a few times through the night. Jonathan Toews was productive with two assists – one came on a great pass to Brent Seabrook for the game winner – and the recently recalled Bryan Bickell was good as well.

The Blackhawks used Jordan Hendry on the wing once again while Kris Versteeg and Andrew Ebbett were scratched from the lineup. Is Hendry really a better option than Ebbett? He only logged 5:15 of ice time. What is the point of even suiting him up? If Stan Bowman would just place Dave Bolland on the LTIR (long-term injured reserve) the practice of utilizing a defenseman as a winger would end, and the ‘Hawks would be able to role out four complete lines.

Coach Quenneville appears to like the line of Andrew Ladd, Madden and Troy Brouwer just as much as I do. He had to make due with what was provided to him, but he kept the three together. They are an effective checking line that can also be productive in the offensive zone – each tallied a point on the scorecard last night.

The Blackhawks have three days off before they head to Calgary to start the six-game circus road trip. On the trip they will play the three Western Canadian teams, and the three Californian teams.

In closing, to the meathead sitting in front of me last night chanting DETOIT SUCKS! every chance you get, STOP! You’re an idiot.

Versteeg And Ebbett Scratched From Lineup

Out of the lineup tonight was Kris Versteeg with an upper-body injury – taking his place was Bryan Bickell who was recalled from Rockford today. He played well tonight, and logged 12:28 of ice time. Like every other call-up this year, expect Bickell to be reassigned before the Blackhawks next game.

Andrew Ebbett was a healthy scratch and out of the lineup as well. The absence of he and Versteeg made for some interesting ling combinations – 1) Sharp, Toews, Kane 2) Ladd, Madden, Brouwer 3) Byfuglien, Kopecky, Eager 4) Bickell, Fraser, Hendry. The different combinations led to some sloppy play. It wasn’t pretty, but a win is a win.

On the way back from the game, I heard on the radio that Versteeg is considered day-to-day. He did sit out of yesterday’s practice, but expect him to return for Thursday’s game in Calgary.

Blackhawks Have Internal Options To Fill-In For Bolland

Just when the Blackhawks were getting healthy and able to roll out a lineup at full strength, Dave Bolland’s lower-back problem could no longer be ignored. The surgery to repair a herniated disk was successful, but now that Bolland will be out between three to four months recovering a replacement is needed.

It’ll be hard to replace a player like him, but initially the organization will hope someone on the roster can fill the void. Yesterday, Stan Bowman said:

“I think we’ve got to sort it out internally first and see what we have. We’ve got some guys who kind of deserve the chance to see how they can play and see how that goes before jumping into anything else. That’s the approach for now and we’ll see how it works.”

A handful of players that can be considered for the role of second line center, and they are Patrick Sharp, John Madden, Kris Versteeg, Tomas Kopecky, Andrew Ebbett and Jake Dowell (currently in Rockford). Ebbett could be given a shot to replace Bolland out of the gate. I’ve been critical of him a time or two, but they guy did tally thirty-two points in forty-eight games for the Ducks last season. So there has to be something there. Right?

The Versteeg experiment at center lasted a little over one game. Coach Quenneville shuffled the lines during the Kings game, and moved him to the wing and put Ebbett on the second line at center – replacing Kopecky. Ebbett played reasonably well, and scored a fluky goal that bounced off his chest and into the net. Kopecky was demoted to the fourth line and keeps proving to be useless.

Sharp and Madden could eventually see time as the second line center, but Quenneville likes them in the role they are in now. I think Dowell would be recalled before either Sharp or Madden are used in that role. Any internal options Bowman has will be exhausted before he resorts to trading for suitable replacement for Bolland as the team is right up against the salary cap.

The Blackhawks play Colorado at home tonight, so we won’t have to wait long to see who Quenneville uses in Bolland’s spot.

In other news: Marian Hossa will take another step in his rehab. He will start participating in full contact drills either Thursday or Friday.
