The Thin Blue Line – Blackhawks 3, Kings 0

Big Buff was solid on defense.

Coach Quenneville didn’t have much to work with on the blue line last night. Three of the Blackhawks six regular defensemen were out of commission. We know Brian Campbell will be out for the rest of the regular season, Kim Johnsson is day-to-day and no timetable has been set for Brent Seabrook’s return. So in order to fill out an already thin blue line, Dustin Byfuglien took the ice at his natural position on defense, and he looked rather comfortable. The defense was tight, limiting Antti Niemi’s workload to a miniscule seventeen shots and a 3-0 shutout (his fifth) of the Kings. Niemi didn’t have to stand on his head, but made the saves he needed to make.

Not only were the Blackhawks good in their own zone, they were on the attack all night tallying three goals on thirty-seven shots. My boy Troy Brouwer scored the first goal of the game in the second period and his twentieth of the year. He was reunited with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane on the first line. Tomas Kopecky padded the ‘Hawks lead by scoring two goals in the third period, and earned him self a pat on the back.

The officiating crew was the same two refs and same two linesmen from Wednesday’s game in Anaheim were they blew a couple big calls – James Wisniewski‘s hit on Seabrook that earned him an eight-game suspension and Corey Perry’s shove of Brent Sople that led to Saku Koivu’s game-winning tally. They made a few calls obviously in favor of the Blackhawks last night. The one that stands out the most was giving Raitis Ivanans two-minutes for roughing on top of the five-minute fighting major when Ben Eager clearly threw the first punch. Anyways, I’m not complaining.

Next up, the Blackhawks will travel to the desert to play the Phoenix Coyotes on Saturday. By then we should hear more on Seabrook’s situation, and more on Johnsson’s day-to-day status.

Blackhawks 3, Kings 2 (OT)

Enough said

As they say over at HOCKEENIGHT, Patrick Sharp is a very handsome man. He had a good night on the scoresheet. Sharp scored the first Blackhawk goal on a pass from Adam Burish from behind the net, and scored the game-winning goal in overtime on a great feed from Dave Bolland who forced the turnover in the neutral zone. The peasants rejoiced, and the Blackhawks came away with two points.

Never did I think seeing Burish back in the lineup would bring a smile to my face. The Blackhawks did just fine with out him, but he does provide a sense of energy in the lineup. In his first shift he had a helper on Sharp’s first goal and received a fighting major for dropping the gloves with forward Richard Clune – just a goal away from the Gordie Howe hat trick. Burish never got that goal. He centered the fourth line.

Burish wasn’t the only player fan’s had their collective eye on. Antti Niemi had to impress last night in order to keep the starting gig. He did a decent job in net, stopping twenty-eight of the Kings’ thirty shots on goal. The two that went in were on Niemi. Still, the Finn had a save percentage of 0.933. I’d say that’s worthy of another start.

Anyway, there isn’t much to complain about from this game. Well, maybe the fact that the second period hasn’t been so kind to the Blackhawks lately, the power play has become anemic once again and the officiating was rather bad. The latter being something out of Coach Quenneville’s control, but there is room for improvement regarding the other two.

Next up, the Blackhawks will be in Philadelphia on Saturday. Don’t expect a recap for that one. I’ll be out drinking Guinness, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day early with the rest of the city.

Streak Over – Blackhawks 0, Ducks 3

Well, the ‘Hawks were unable to keep their streak alive with a 3-0 loss yesterday afternoon in Anaheim. The Ducks were determined to take down the hottest team in the league with a solid outing from J.S. Giguere. He saved every one of the twenty-eight shots he faced. The Ducks were one of the few teams able to penetrate the Blackhawks’ stellar penalty kill by scoring all three of their goals with a man-advantage.

Losses will happen and streaks won’t last, but the Ducks brought their best effort yesterday. In the near future other teams will look to what Anaheim did to get a win over the Blackhawks. However, this team will only get better as Marian Hossa returns to last year’s form.

The Blackhawks will hope to return home from the circus road trip with a win over the Los Angeles Kings, but they will do their best to stop that from happening. Coach Quenneville will have to keep the teams focus in the last game of the almost two-week trip. The Kings can score, they can play defense and their goaltending is pretty good too.

I wouldn’t expect for the line combinations to be any different tonight, and in the immediate future – seeing consistent lines out there on a nightly basis will be beneficial, and a welcome change from the constant jumbling of lines Quenneville did earlier this season.

Welcome Back – Blackhawks 4, Kings 1

The Blackhawks welcomed Jonathan Toews and Ben Eager back to the team with a big 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings. Last night, the ‘Hawks arguably played their best game this season. There were mistakes such as turnovers in the defensive zone, but the boys clicked in so many ways last night.

Coach Quenneville line Toews up with Patrick Sharp and Dustin Byfuglien on the first line. Byfuglien, as always, didn’t do much, but Sharp had his best game of the season. He was all over the ice last night, and making plays in the offensive zone assisting on the two power play goals. One of them was on the deflection by Troy Brouwer who had a great game for himself as well. The other was on the Toews goal a couple minutes later.

It could have been the Kings ineptitude on the penalty kill, but the Blackhawks were very effective on the power play. They scored on two of the three chances with the man advantage. Tomas Kopecky was still on the power play unit, and Byfuglien saw time on the point paired with Cam Barker. I guess it’s better than having Sharp up there.

I haven’t mentioned this at all this season, but I really like watching John Madden play. He seems to enjoy the freedom the coaching staff gives him, and his lone goal – first of the game – set things off right for the Blackhawks. The line of Madden, Brouwer and Andrew Ladd works, and it should be kept together well after Marian Hossa’s debut.

The six games with out Toews were hard to watch at times, knowing that this team is so much better then their play indicated. It’s refreshing to watch a game where the Blackhawks are able to play their game and dominate almost every minute. Having Toews back in the lineup changes the dynamic of the team in a very positive way, and with the addition of Hossa in a few more weeks this team will be scary.

Toews And Eager Return To Greet The Kings

Mr. Jonathan Toews

Mr. Jonathan Toews

The Blackhawks return to the United Center after a road trip, with results that were less then ideal, to play the Los Angeles Kings in tonight’s only game. There was some bad news to come out of the weekend, Dave Bolland’s lower-back problems are getting worse. He should be out for tonight’s game (second consecutive) and surgery could be an option if Bolland’s back doesn’t improve after some rest.

There is some good news today, however. Jonathan Toews and Ben Eager will return to the lineup tonight. The Blackhawks haven’t been able to roll out any consistent lines sine the Captain went down, and team is having difficulty generating chemistry with their line mates as a result. The return of Toews and Eager should help fix that, but Bolland’s absence from the lineup has led to more jumbling of the lines. Kris Versteeg will see more time at center as he did in Colorado, and Tomas Kopecky will be utilized on the third line as a winger.

The surprising Kings are led by Anze Kopitar and anchored in net by Jonathan Quick – a great name for a goalie. Kopitar, who is just tearing it up right now, leads Los Angeles in goals (13), assists (14) and points (27) of course. Quick has started every game but one for the Kings this season, and he appears to be the piece the organization has been searching for in net the last few years.

It was only a matter of time for the Kings to turn their fortunes around. A capable goalie, and the development of Kopitar and defenseman Drew Doughty have been key factors into the team’s early season performance – the veteran presence of a guy like Ryan Smyth helps too. The league needed the team based in the second biggest market in the United States to succeed, and now it appears to be the case.

Anyway, the return of Toews should provide some energy at even strength and on the power play. The Kings rank twenty-seventh in the league ok the penalty kill at 75.4%, and the ‘Hawks need to use tonight’s game as a launching pad for their play on the man-advantage. I would hope the return of Toews would remove Kopecky from power play duties.

One last thought on Bolland, the organization should treat him like they have with every other injury on the season. Take care of the injury now no matter how long it takes to mend – a healthy player is more valuable down the stretch rather than playing hurt now. If surgery is required, Bolland could miss about two months.
