Kyle Beach (Plus Three) To Join IceHogs

The IceHogs signed forward David Gilbert to an amateur try-out agreement Thursday. Gilbert was selected in the seventh round (206th overall) of the 2009 entry draft by the Blackhawks, and spent the season in the QJMHL between the Quebec Remparts and Acadie-Bathurst Titan. In sixty-two games Gilbert scored twenty-four goals and twenty-four assists (forty-eight points). He should be ready to dress for Friday’s game against the Lake Erie Monsters. Gilbert has one year of eligibility left in the junior ranks, and should return to the QJMHL next season.

On Friday the IceHogs added three more players to their roster. The most notable being top prospect Kyle Beach (Red Rising’s #1) whose WHL career ended just a couple days ago when the Spokane Chiefs were ousted form the playoffs by the Portland Winterhawks in seven games. In those seven matches Beach scored seven goals and added two assists (nine points). On the season he played in sixty-eight games scoring fifty-two goals, thirty-four assists (eighty-six points) and 186 penalty minutes to boot. Beach ranked first in the WHL in goals and fifth in penalty minutes. He is under contract with the Chicago Blackhawks – currently in the first year of a three-year deal.

The IceHogs also signed defenseman Ryan Stanton and forward Brandon Bollig to amateur try-out agreements. Stanton already has a three-year entry-level deal in place that will begin at the start of next season. He scored ten goals and added thirty assists (forty points) in fifty games with the Moose Jaw Warriors of the WHL. Bollig finished his sophomore season at St. Lawrence University where scored seven goals with eighteen assists (twenty-five points) in forty-two games. His rights don’t belong to any club in the NHL. Update – He was signed by the Blackhawks to a two-year deal on April 4.

Blackhawks Extend Affiliation With Rockford And Toledo

Rockford IceHogs

Toledo Walleye

The Blackhawks announced the other day that the Toledo Walleye would remain the organization’s ECHL (East Coast Hockey League) affiliate for the 2010-11 season. They also extended their contract with the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL (American Hockey League) for another season as well. Rockford has served as the Blackhawks AHL affiliate for three seasons, and next season will obviously be the fourth.

It was the inaugural season for the Walleye in the league. The Blackhawks actually share affiliation of the team with the Detroit Red Wings. The organization owns the rights to seven players currently on the Walleye roster – most notably being forward prospect Akim Aliu (Red Rising’s #5).

Crawford Retruned To Rockford, Niemi To Start In Phoenix

Corey Crawford was reassigned to Rockford after the two-game call-up to replace an ailing Cristobal Huet in the lineup. He made his first start in the show this season against the Anaheim Ducks. Crawford played well, and escaped the game with a save percentage of 0.914. He did make one big mistake when leaving the crease to play the puck. The Ducks were able to for a turnover and score their second goal of the game as a result. Subsequently, Alec Richards was reassigned to Toledo after last night’s IceHog game serving as backup.

In related news, Antti Niemi will get the start tonight in Phoenix with Huet serving as backup. Niemi is coming of a 3-0 shutout of the Kings just two days ago.

Lalonde Assigned To Rockford, And More Movement

Well, the Belleville Bulls season is over and that means the OHL career of Blackhawk defensive prospect (Red Rising’s #2) Shawn Lalonde is over as well. It was a disappointing season in Belleville for the Bulls, but not so much for Lalonde. He has his best season for the Bulls playing in fifty-eight games tallying fifty-six points (thirteen goals and forty-three assists). Lalonde signed a three-year entry-level deal with the organization earlier this season, and Tuesday he was reassigned to Rockford. He should be in the lineup on Friday when the IceHogs face the Peoria Rivermen.

More minor league movement –

We already know that Nick Boynton cleared waivers Tuesday, and will be in the lineup in Anaheim as Kim Johnsson didn’t make the trip to Los Angeles with the team due to injury. There have been reports he will meet the Blackhawks in Phoenix. Boynton has 547 NHL games on his resume with 135 points (33 goals, 102 assists), 810 penalty minutes and a plus/minus rating of +18.

Corey Crawford was recalled for his first cup of coffee this season, and will surprisingly get the start Wednesday against the Ducks. He is replacing Cristobal Huet in the lineup because he has the flu. Yea, the goaltending issues haven’t improved, but I don’t really understand why Coach Quenneville isn’t going to allow Antti Niemi get the start in the back-to-back games. He could use the work with fourteen games left in the regular season. Subsequently, the IceHogs recalled Alec Richards from Toledo.

Akim Aliu Reassigned To The Walleye

Prospect Akim Aliu was reassigned to the Toledo Walleye (ECHL) from the Rockford IceHogs (AHL) where he played forty-eight games. With the IceHogs he scored eleven goals and six assists for a total of seventeen points – Aliu also accumulated sixty-nine penalty minutes. No matter how you look at it, this is not the direction any organization wants a top prospect to go. The Blackhawks had (and still have) high hopes for Aliu since his selection in the second round (56th overall) of the 2007 draft.

Aliu didn’t start the season off well, but from what I’ve read his level of play has improved and has become more confident on the ice. The demotion to the ECHL won’t be the kiss of death for Aliu’s career. He will see more ice-time with the Walleye. With the frequency that Mark Bernard (the General Manager of Minor League Affiliations) moves players between Rockford and Toledo, Aliu’s stay could be short.

Live Rust – Blackhawks 3, Islanders 5

Out of the Blue, and Into the Black

Hey Hey, My My (Out of the Blue) – The Blackhawks went into the Nassau Coliseum expecting a victory over a weaker foe, but left with a rather embarrassing loss to the Islanders. Entrenched on home ice, the Islanders won the game 5-3 due to the goaltending performance of Dwayne Roloson. It looked as though the Blackhawks were ill prepared and were trying to shake off the rust that accumulated over the two-week Olympic break. The goaltending effort from both goalies was poor, and the defense in front of them wasn’t any better.

A couple Olympians came out strong in this one, however. Jonathan Toews had two assists on the night, and Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists. It appeared as though Coach Quenneville was trying to give the non-Olympians more ice-time. No player saw less then ten minutes of ice-time against the Islanders.

Next up, the Blackhawks host the Oilers tonight at the United Center. With the trade deadline about an hour away, an anonymous source said that Bowman is trading Tomas Kopecky to the Maple Leafs for a case of WD40. Now, that is the type of ‘joke’ that would cause my girlfriend to pretend she doesn’t know me.

Minor Moves –

Defenseman Simon Danis-Pepin was reassigned to the Toledo Walleye by way of Rockford. In thirty-eight games with the IceHogs he had one goal and seven assists – eight points. This will be his first time in Toledo and the ECHL. The move is due to the number of newly acquired defensemen in Rockford.

Blackhawks Acquire Nick Boynton

Stan Bowman added to his collection of defenseman in Rockford with his most recent acquisition – Nick Boynton formerly of the Anaheim Ducks. In return the Ducks receive future considerations. In forty-two games he had one goal and six assists, and Boynton was reassigned to the Manitoba Moose where he played nine games with four assists. He was immediately sent to Rockford.

Boynton is big and physical, and is nothing more then a third pairing defenseman. His contract is up at the end of the season. Bowman’s stockpiling of defensemen in Rockford intrigues my inner conspiracy theorist. However, if there is nothing there, at least the move creates space between Jassen Cullimore and a roster spot on the Blackhawks.

Stan’s Big Plan – Stockpile Rockford With Junk

Stan Bowman pulled the trigger on another pre-deadline trade this afternoon. The Blackhawks sent goalie Joe Fallon to the Blues for goalie Hannu Toivonen and defenseman Danny Richmond. Toivonen and Richmond have been assigned to the Rockford IceHogs. This will be Richmond’s second tour in the ‘Hawks organization, and Toivonen was once a highly touted goaltending prospect with the Bruins.

“Hannu and Danny will add great depth to our Rockford team and will have an immediate impact on their roster. I am happy with this move because it bolsters what is already a strong IceHogs lineup.”

Not a big fan of this trade. No one is going to miss Joe Fallon this year or the next, but he was the best player in the deal. In return the Blackhawks received a couple washed up prospects. I might be in the minority here, but I could care less about creating depth in Rockford and where the IceHogs finish in the standings. I would like for my general manager to make moves for players with potential for a NHL career, not AHL roster fillers. That being said, Bowman must see something in Toivonen – Richmond was just a toss-in player.

Jassen Cullimore Signed And Assigned

So here’s the scoop. The Blackhawks signed defenseman Jassen Cullimore to a deal this morning. Remember him? Cullimore was a Blackhawk for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. Over the course of those two seasons, he tallied fourteen points (119 games). The defenseman was playing with Rockford on a professional try-out agreement, and will stay with the IceHogs for the immediate future.

This move will provide the Blackhawks with some more depth at the blue line in Rockford. After Jordan Hendry there isn’t anyone in Rockford ready for the show. Cullimore fill the role, but hopefully we don’t see him suit up for the Blackhawks.

Dowell Recalled From Rockford

Thought I posted this earlier… Jake Dowell was recalled from Rockford this afternoon to replace Marian Hossa in tonight’s lineup. Hossa took a hit to the head from Colby Armstrong in last night’s game vs. Atlanta. Dowell should return to the IceHogs following tonight’s game. John Madden was moved to the injured reserve to make the move possible.
