Back To Toledo For Richards

Alec Richards was returned to Toledo just a day after being recalled by the IceHogs on Friday. He joined the IceHogs in Grand Rapids where he started the game. Richards saved thirty-three of the thirty-four shots to earn the 2-1 victory. In three starts in the AHL, he is 2-1-0 with a goals-against average of 2.02.

Alec Richards Recalled By Rockford

The Rockford IceHogs recalled Alec Richards from Toledo this morning. He will join the team in Grand Rapids for tonight’s game. This will be his second stint with the IceHogs this season, and was reassigned to Toledo about a week ago.

Mark Bernard, IceHogs GM, has been actively looking to replace Corey Crawford as he recovers from a lower-body injury – he has been shutdown since November 13th. Joe Fallon has done a great with the increased workload with Crawford out (2.30GAA; 0.924SV%). He will be the primary goalie while Crawford sidelined.

Just five days ago the IceHogs signed veteran goalie Dan Cloutier to a professional try-out agreement, and now Richards is back in the mix. With the addition of two more goalies in Rockford it might mean Crawford could be out of commission longer then expected.

Minor League Housekeeping

With the recent new of what is reported as a sure thing, the signing of the big three to contract extensions, I missed the news that the Rockford IceHogs recalled three players from the Blackhawks’ ECHL affiliate, the Toledo Walleye. Goaltender Alec Richards, defenseman J.C. Sawyer and non-roster forward Maxime Tanguay made the trip.

Richards and Sawyer are worthy of the call-up due to their performances in the ECHL. Richards’ boasts a 4-1-2 record as a Walleye this season, and a 2.75 goals against average. Sawyer was second on the team in total points with sixteen (five goals, eleven assists) in twelve games.

Four More Sent To Toledo By Way Of Rockford

Yesterday, four more players were sent to the Toledo Walleye from Rockford. Forwards Dan Bertram, Adam Hobson and goalie Alec Richards were three of the four to go. Maxime Tanguay – a non- roster player – was also cut from the IceHogs roster.

Richards’ demotion to Toledo is a direct result of Corey Crawford’s return to the AHL, and will free up space in net for him and Joe Fallon.

Toledo Walleye – New ECHL Affiliate

The Blackhawks announced today that the organization will have a new ECHL (East Coast Hockey League) affiliate this season will be the Toledo Walleye. Last year the ‘Hawks were affiliated with the Fresno Falcons before they folded due to low revenue and dwindling attendance. The Gwinnett Gladiators became a temporary home for the rest of the season. Relocating the ECHL affiliate to Toledo will bring prospects in the Blackhawks’ system closer to Rockford and Chicago.

Often teams are unable to fill out an entire roster at this level and opt to share an affiliate with another NHL organization. Well, of all twenty-nine other teams in the league, the Blackhawks will share the ECHL affiliation with the Detroit Red Wings – this will be their first season with Toledo as well.
