Blackhawks 5, Bruins 2

This one looked like it was going to be one of those (rare) nights for the Blackhawks. They were down 2-0 to the Bruins just eight minutes into the game. Boston’s first goal came on the power play, as Blackhawks penalty-kill unit couldn’t get the puck out of their end. Blake Wheeler redirected Derek Morris’ initial shot for the goal. Their second tally came off a Blackhawks’ turnover deep in the defensive zone, and Miroslav Satan waited for Antti Niemi to drop. At point-blank range, he aimed high to score the Bruins second and final goal.

Duncan Keith brought the Blackhawks into the game with a one-timer just shy of the blue line, which snuck past Tim Thomas to his right. Minutes later Ben Eager started the sequence that led to Colin Fraser’s feed to Tomas Kopecky for the Blackhawks’ second goal. After the first period, the Blackhawks and Bruins were tied at 2-2.

In the second frame, the Blackhawks were able to capitalize on the momentum gained in the first period. Andrew Ladd screened Thomas as Brent Seabrook fired the puck on the net. Thomas saved the initial shot, but Ladd poked in the rebound to score. Both he and my boy Troy Brouwer have been productive stationing themselves in front of the opposing team’s net.

Keith was able to extend the Blackhawks’ lead by two when his wrist shot from the point that made it’s way past Thomas. It appeared as though the massive Zdeno Chara screened his own goalie, which made Keith’s goal possible. It was the second goal of the night with the fourth line on the ice. They continue to be very productive for Coach Quenneville. Fraser, Kopecky and Eager had a plus/minus of +2 on the night. Keith had a big night as well, scoring two goals, helping on one and a plus/minus of +4.

Patrick Kane added the Blackhawks’ fifth unanswered goal of the night late in the third frame. Brouwer put pressure on the Bruins defense after a Jonathan Toews face-off loss, and retrieved the puck to set up Kane for his nineteenth on the season. His point streak is now at ten games.

The ability the Blackhawks have to comeback after an early two-goal deficit on the road can be attributed to the team’s tenacity, and the solid goaltending of Niemi. His rebound control wasn’t as good as it has been, but he and the defense shutdown the Bruins for the remainder of the night.

Next up, the Blackhawks will visit the Minnesota Wild tomorrow night, then host the Anaheim Ducks at the United Center the next night. Enjoy the ride ladies and gentlemen.

Blackhawks 4, Wild 1

Thirty wins in forty-three games is impressive. The Blackhawks have won eleven of their last thirteen games, and have extended their lead over the second place team in the Central Division, the Nashville Predators, to ten points. So many good things are happening for the Blackhawks right now. The power play unit – that had been so bad – has scored with the man-advantage in the last eight games. The current streak has improved the ‘Hawks power-play percentage to 20.8 – sixth overall in the league.

Another positive of late has been the play of the fourth line. Their playing time hasn’t increased all that much, but the combination of Ben Eager, Colin Fraser and Tomas Kopecky are no longer invisible on the ice. It pains me to write this, but with the elevated play of Kopecky the line has been more productive.

Marian Hossa scored another two goals last night, and Patrick Kane added another to his team-leading total – now at eighteen goals. Hossa is the seventh Blackhawk to reach double-digits. John Madden is just one away after scoring his ninth goal in the first period. Brian Campbell continues he resurrection as the seven-million-dollar-man last night with his play in the offensive zone, and adding two helpers.

Cristobal Huet’s performance in the first period illustrated a few of the reasons why I’m not a fan. He was out of position, slow, lacked puck control, and the defense had to bail him out to keep the Wild off the scoreboard. Brent Seabrook put himself in front of a sure Andrew Brunette goal, and Duncan Keith back-checked to thwart a good scoring chance by the Wild on a short handed rush. In both cases, Huet was scrambling across the crease to get back in position. Once the Blackhawks defense settled down late in the first period, so did Huet, and that has been the story on him for the majority of the season.

Next up, the Blackhawks will travel to Boston for another Original Six match-up Thursday night.

Blackhawks 6, Blues 3

Last night’s 6-3 victory in St. Louis turned into a melee on the ice because the Blues were reckless, and the officiating was atrocious. Ben Eager won’t miss anytime for fighting with bandages on his hands – apparently that’s frowned upon by the league. Even Jonathan Toews got into the mix. I like his willingness to jump in there, but no one ever wants Toews to drop the gloves and risk injury.

The Blackhawks were a vastly superior team, and the Blues resorted to mass-goonery because they couldn’t keep up. Cristobal Huet had an decent night and come up with a few big saves. If Tomas Kopecky can tally two goals on an opposing team, they aren’t any good.

Anyway, the ‘Hawks will host the Anaheim Ducks at the United Center tonight. Fatigue is always a concern when playing back-to-back games, but starting Antti Niemi in net should alleviate some of that. Niklas Hjalmarsson should won’t be back tonight after missing the trip to St. Louis with a ‘head-injury’. Jordan Hendry will start in his place.

Hossa And Kopecky Named To Slovakian Olympic Team

A couple Blackhawks got some good news today. Marian Hossa and Tomas Kopecky were selected to the Slovakian Olympic hockey team. They are the first Blackhawks chosen to represent their country at the Winter Games in Vancouver.

No one will question Hossa’s addition to the roster. The choice of picking Kopecky to the team might surprise many since he hasn’t done anything of value with Chicago, but he is one of the few Slovakian players in the NHL. Only two Slovakian NHL players didn’t make the team – Marek Svatos and Boris Valabik. When Czechoslovakia split in 1993, most of the hockey talent resided in the Czech Republic.

Team Canada will announce their Olympic squad tomorrow morning, and Team USA will announce theirs New Years Day during the Winter Classic broadcast.

Nashville Yesterday, Nashville Today And The Swedish Front

The Blackhawks put more space between them and Nashville with a 4-1 win over the second-place Predators last night. Six points separate the two Western Conference teams, and the ‘Hawks hope to add to the lead when they host their half of the home-and-home series tonight at the United Center. This match-up will be the last time the Blackhawks will face the Predators this regular season.

An observation from last night’s game was the Blackhawks dominance over their Central Division foe. It appears as though Coach Quenneville has everyone buying into what he is selling. First, Brent Sopel starts the season by not sucking. Then Dustin Byfuglien shows that he has the ability to beat a defender on a breakaway, and has played well since being demoted to the third line. Brian Campbell finally looks like the seven-million-dollar-man by scoring goals and skating all over the ice surface. Now, Tomas Kopecky proves to have some value by tallying two assists last night.

Penalty killing continues to be stellar for the Blackhawks, and the added scoring threat on the kill with Marian Hossa and Jonathan Toews will put teams on there heals with the man-advantage. There were a few good rushes and scoring chances while shorthanded last night. The power play has been effective in the last two match-ups – going one of three in each game. Byfuglien scored the lone power play goal on a wrist-shot from the blue line. He’s making me look bad after I suggested removing Byfuglien off the power play the other day.

On the Swedish Front –

Team Sweden neglected to add Hjalmarsson to their Olympic roster. He’s still Chicago’s little secret. The Swedes opted for a veteran squad. Remember Magnus Johansson? He made the team.

Swedish prospect Marcus Kruger had an assist, two penalty minutes and a plus/minus rating of +1 in the 10-1 victory over the Czech Republic at the World Junior Championships.

Niemi In Net vs. Bruins, And Hjalmarsson Out Sick

Antti Niemi will start in net for the Blackhawks as they host the Boston Bruins at the United Center tonight. We knew he earned more starts, but I’m a little surprised that Coach Quenneville opted to use Niemi following a Cristobal Huet shutout. Quenneville must want a fresh Huet for Detroit on Sunday.

It’s also been reported that Niklas Hjalmarsson will miss tonight’s game with the flu, but Cam Barker who left in the middle of the Blues’ game with a lower-body injury will be in the lineup. Hjalmarsson’s absence from the lineup will mean Tomas Kopecky return to his spot on the fourth line, and Jordan Hendry will see some playing time on defense

Update: Ben Eager is out, and Bryan Bickell was recalled to fill his spot on the fourth line.

Changes have been reflected on our In the Organization page above.

Rangers Visit For Original Six Match-Up

The Rangers don’t have much going for then right now outside of Marian Gaborik and Henrik Lundqvist – my favorite goalie in the league. Original Six match-ups are always awesome, but this game doesn’t carry as much weight as it would if the Blackhawks played the Red Wings or Bruins – this season at least – as the Rangers have fallen fast after a quick start to the season.

Coming out of one of the most intense games of the season, everything is not all gravy for the Blackhawks. In their last five games, not one game was won in regulation. The problem is that the Blackhawks aren’t scoring goals at the rate they should be. In those five games, the Blackhawks have only eight goals. During this stretch only five of the possible ten points have been earned.

The absence of Dave Bolland from the lineup has become apparent, and could directly have something to do with offensive regression. Coach Quenneville has been deliberately searching for a replacement as the second-line center since Bolland opted for surgery. Right now that man Patrick Sharp. Kris Versteeg did okay in the role, but is better suited as a playmaking winger.

In Pittsburgh, Quenneville skated Versteeg on the same line as Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa. He will flirt tonight with the brilliant idea of demoting the useless Dustin Byfuglien to the checking line, and replacing him with Troy Brouwer on the second line with Sharp and Patrick Kane. Those are two top lines I can get behind.

A couple other lineup notes for tonight’s game is that Cristobal Huet will start in net and Tomas Kopecky will return to the fourth line.

Kaner Turned 21 – Blackhawks 7, Flames 1

The Calgary Flames must hate the Blackhawks more then they did going into tonight’s match-up. The ‘Hawks swept the season series last year, knocked them out of last year’s playoffs in the first round, and came back from five down in a historic victory earlier this season. Tonight, in the first of the six-game circus road trip the ‘Hawks won big over the Flame, 7-1.

First Period – Cristobal Huet started they game off well by making some great saves in the first period, and there were some great instances of back-checking by the Blackhawks that successfully disrupted the Flames in the defensive zone. Niklas Hjalmarsson spoiled a good scoring chance for Rene Bourque as he knocked the puck to Huet while was falling to the ice.

Troy Brouwer keeps winning my heart with his play in front of the net, and his goal off on his third consecutive rebound is just one example of how he is becoming the best on the roster in that spot. In the last five games, Brouwer has three goals and three assists.

Second Period – Olli Jokinen came out of the first intermission scoring up high on Huet with a man-advantage, but Hjalmarsson answered with a huge hit on Bourque seconds later. The Blackhawks were able to rattle off five unanswered goals to break the short-lived tie. Two of the period’s goals were from Kris Versteeg, one from Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien and Patrick Kane each. Huet was solid for the rest of the period after the early goal.

Third Period – It would have been easy for the Blackhawks to coast for the rest of the game with a five-goal lead, but they kept the pressure on the Flames. Huet made some more key saves, one in particular from Jokinen on his glove side. To top it off, Tomas Kopecky set up Ben Eager for his first goal of the season.

Blackhawks Have Internal Options To Fill-In For Bolland

Just when the Blackhawks were getting healthy and able to roll out a lineup at full strength, Dave Bolland’s lower-back problem could no longer be ignored. The surgery to repair a herniated disk was successful, but now that Bolland will be out between three to four months recovering a replacement is needed.

It’ll be hard to replace a player like him, but initially the organization will hope someone on the roster can fill the void. Yesterday, Stan Bowman said:

“I think we’ve got to sort it out internally first and see what we have. We’ve got some guys who kind of deserve the chance to see how they can play and see how that goes before jumping into anything else. That’s the approach for now and we’ll see how it works.”

A handful of players that can be considered for the role of second line center, and they are Patrick Sharp, John Madden, Kris Versteeg, Tomas Kopecky, Andrew Ebbett and Jake Dowell (currently in Rockford). Ebbett could be given a shot to replace Bolland out of the gate. I’ve been critical of him a time or two, but they guy did tally thirty-two points in forty-eight games for the Ducks last season. So there has to be something there. Right?

The Versteeg experiment at center lasted a little over one game. Coach Quenneville shuffled the lines during the Kings game, and moved him to the wing and put Ebbett on the second line at center – replacing Kopecky. Ebbett played reasonably well, and scored a fluky goal that bounced off his chest and into the net. Kopecky was demoted to the fourth line and keeps proving to be useless.

Sharp and Madden could eventually see time as the second line center, but Quenneville likes them in the role they are in now. I think Dowell would be recalled before either Sharp or Madden are used in that role. Any internal options Bowman has will be exhausted before he resorts to trading for suitable replacement for Bolland as the team is right up against the salary cap.

The Blackhawks play Colorado at home tonight, so we won’t have to wait long to see who Quenneville uses in Bolland’s spot.

In other news: Marian Hossa will take another step in his rehab. He will start participating in full contact drills either Thursday or Friday.

Welcome Back – Blackhawks 4, Kings 1

The Blackhawks welcomed Jonathan Toews and Ben Eager back to the team with a big 4-1 win over the Los Angeles Kings. Last night, the ‘Hawks arguably played their best game this season. There were mistakes such as turnovers in the defensive zone, but the boys clicked in so many ways last night.

Coach Quenneville line Toews up with Patrick Sharp and Dustin Byfuglien on the first line. Byfuglien, as always, didn’t do much, but Sharp had his best game of the season. He was all over the ice last night, and making plays in the offensive zone assisting on the two power play goals. One of them was on the deflection by Troy Brouwer who had a great game for himself as well. The other was on the Toews goal a couple minutes later.

It could have been the Kings ineptitude on the penalty kill, but the Blackhawks were very effective on the power play. They scored on two of the three chances with the man advantage. Tomas Kopecky was still on the power play unit, and Byfuglien saw time on the point paired with Cam Barker. I guess it’s better than having Sharp up there.

I haven’t mentioned this at all this season, but I really like watching John Madden play. He seems to enjoy the freedom the coaching staff gives him, and his lone goal – first of the game – set things off right for the Blackhawks. The line of Madden, Brouwer and Andrew Ladd works, and it should be kept together well after Marian Hossa’s debut.

The six games with out Toews were hard to watch at times, knowing that this team is so much better then their play indicated. It’s refreshing to watch a game where the Blackhawks are able to play their game and dominate almost every minute. Having Toews back in the lineup changes the dynamic of the team in a very positive way, and with the addition of Hossa in a few more weeks this team will be scary.
